The Star
Journalism
In March 2017 I joined BRATs, a junior journalist programme under The Star, a Malaysian English newspaper and media company. I was inducted into the programme after successfully completing a bootcamp where I was trained in journalistic writing, photography and video content creation. The trainers were from The Star’s esteemed R.AGE unit, an award-winning investigative journalism team (now Fourth Media).
I contributed articles to the newspaper, mostly on youth interest topics, as a freelance journalist from 2017 until 2020. In 2017, I spent my year-end school holidays as an intern at The Star’s headquarters, shadowing senior journalists on their assignments.
As part of my internship, I was able to reunite with the R.AGE team and assist them in their research for their documentary series Student/Trafficked and subtitling their first feature-length film Eye on the Ball.
My training also came in handy for my school extracurriculars. I was able to apply my journalistic skills as head of the yearbook editorial committee during my senior year.
